What should you do if you suspect your child is using drugs?
If your child has developed a pattern of drug use or has engaged in heavy use, intervention is key. Contact
Applied Behavioral Science’s Alcohol and Drug Abuse Family Intervention Program as soon as possible or contact a drug treatment program in your area, or call your state department of Mental Hygiene for a referral. Your school district should have a substance abuse coordinator or a counselor who can refer you to treatment programs, too. Parents whose children have been through treatment programs can also provide information. Parents are the first defense in preventing drug use. They must show by example that drugs are not a healthy choice and must educate themselves so they can provide accurate information to their children, explaining the negative consequences of specific drugs.
Many teen drug users will manipulate there parents if caught using drugs by justifying there usage. They may lead parents to believe it is what all the kids are doing or it is acceptable behavior in our modern American society. Or they may say it is just a phase I am going through or it is not a problem just an experiment.
All Drug use is a problem and it is progressive in nature. It will worsen if not treated leading to drug addiction, overdose, criminal involvement, incarceration and death.
